Pope Frances calls for Jubilee Year of Mercy
Pope Francis has designated this new year in the church as a Jubilee Year of Mercy: Dec. 8, 2015 — Nov. 20, 2016. He has called for the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy “as a special time for the Church, a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger and more effective.” In his letter on the Year of Mercy, he encouraged each of the faithful to live it “as an extraordinary moment of grace and spiritual renewal.” He explained that mercy is the “very foundation of the Church’s life,” and that its “very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love.” "I
have asked the Church in this Jubilee Year
to rediscover the richness encompassed
by the spiritual and corporal works of
mercy. The experience of mercy, indeed
becomes visible in the witness of concrete
signs as Jesus himself taught us."
—Pope Francis. For more information, please go to: archden.org/mercy.
Year of Mercy Ideas
24 Hours for the Lord—Adoration and Penance
March 4, 5:00 PM - March 5, 5:00 PM at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. When calling for the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis expressed his desire that “this moment be linked, first and foremost, to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.”
Additionally, he asked that the initiative “24 Hours for the Lord” be celebrated on the Friday and Saturday preceding the Fourth Week of Lent. “So many people,” he wrote, “including young people, are returning to the Sacrament of Reconciliation; through this experience they are rediscovering a path back to the Lord, living a moment of intense prayer and finding meaning in their lives.”
